Long term engagement in Sao
(Plateau Bateke, Kinshasa)
Since 2020
In 2020, Nada Tshibwabwa partially moved to Sao, a village on the Plateau Bateke, in the outskirts of Kinshasa. Here, a space emerges that connects the arts to agriculture and education to exchange. In this space multiple knowledges converge and dialogical forms of transmission are at the center, not only between humans but also between humans and the environment. One of the many aims of this space is to replant trees, fruit bearing or not, to act against deforestation that is happening on the Plateau to feed the nearby capital with charcoal at least since the 1950s.

The space has already hosted several projects by Nada Tshibwabwa, among them workshops for children, as well as collaborations with other artists. Among them are Bebson de la Rue, Sarah Ndele, Orakle Ngoy, Spiritus Bongonda. Projects that have happened here include “TANGO : On the (Dis-)Integration of Times”, initiated by Afrika Diva Collectif (funded by prohelvetia); and “Futura Tropika”, initiated by Juan Pablo García Sossa (funded through EYEBEAM).
