Mokumbusu azanga mokila
[The monkey without a tail]
2023
Acrylic on glass
In this painting on glass, Nada Tshibwabwa argues that humans are ultimately just monkeys without tails, and that there is a direct, evolutionary link between the two. In so doing, the artist questions the division between nature and culture, and how humans like to claim the latter for themselves. He underlines this fact by attaching antennae to the head of the human-monkey. But perhaps this division is as fragile as the material the artist has chosen for this work, casting as many shadows as the silhouette of the painted figure.
