In the center of the painting we see a woman running with speed – helped by shoes with wheels. The money she grabs onto is also flying around. A necklace with a Christian cross emphasizes the speed and seems to pull her forward. In her hand she holds a symbol that finds a parallel in another object at the bottom of the painting. Both are symbols of self-protection that can be turned against opponents. The representation of her hair is reminiscent of Baluba statues, which are linked to the Kasala tradition (songs of distress and pain). This painting demonstrates the daily resourcefulness of providing for one’s family and fighting for a better life – even if it means becoming an accomplice in small or large-scale corruption.
