Nada Tshibwabwa created this performance in the village of Sao. This village is located outside the city of Kinshasa, but there is a strong trade exchange with the capital – agricultural products go out, industrial products come in. The scrunchies, being a mass-produced, everyday product for various hairstyles, seemed to be a useful material to comment on these realities of trade with the city and at the same time question perceptions of wealth and beauty.
